CES 1st Annual Book Exchange = Success!

80+ students participated in the event and what an event it was! Students brought in close to 600 gently used books. On the night of the Science Fair, those students were able to "shop" for new-to-them books. I was able to pull some books from donations to use in the library. The leftovers will be taken to McKay's Used Book Store in Nashville and exchanged for titles we can use in the library. The event was a success all the way around! I heard a couple of people ask when we were going to do it again. :) Thanks to Mrs. Sherry, Mrs. Donna, Ms. Sherry, Mrs. Christy, Mr. Robert, and Mr. Craig for all their hard work to make sure this was a success! I couldn't have done it without them!

Book mending

The librarian's husband (a.k.a. the BHE) has been hard at work mending books. It is such a blessing to have such an amazing helper by my side!

In the past...

Today I gathered some old books and some that students frequently check out today. I placed these books in a display to show students what their parents might have read as a child.

A big thank you to....

Ms. Monica ;) without your help, I would never be able to get all the quiz #s in the books! Thanks and see you Friday!

15,000 books read challenge

The students are challenging Mrs. Johnson. When (not if) they read 15,000 books, she will ?. The students will pick one of the following and the one with the most votes wins! 1) catch a pie in the face 2) dress up like Justin Bieber and sing one of his songs or 3) dress in a chicken suit and do the chicken dance. Which would you chose?

Fall

I attended the Tennessee Association of School Librarians (TASL) conference in Murfreesboro on Friday, September 30th. I was excited to meet with other librarians and gain insight as to how their libraries work. I got freebies and lots of ideas...even some free books!

The library received almost $500 worth of books from the PTO's bookfair. Thanks to all the PTO people for their generosity!

The library also received a generous donation from the Isbell family ~ over 40 videos! These will be ready for check - out once a student reaches their AR goal in the second nine weeks. I also have the magazines barcoded and, like videos, these will be ready for check out when students reach their AR goals.

I am working on the Library Newsletter which will be included in with your child's report card....so be on the lookout for that! Also, I am planning a Book Exchange for the night of Parent - Teacher conferences. More information soon!

Happy Reading!

Thank you for the donations!

This week the library received donations from Mrs. Misty, Mrs. Kem, and one of my former 3rd graders, Katelyn. We added almost fifty books to the library! I really appreciate all the support shown to the library. Happy Labor Day weekend!

Donations to the Library

The Adopt a Book program is off to a great start! Four students and one teacher have adopted books so far.

I'd like to say "Thank you, thank you, thank you!" to Mr. Tom and Mrs. Kitty Mayo from Volume One bookstore. They recently donated ten bookshelves and one revolving book case. The library received three of these. I am going to use the revolving book case to house movies for check out. Students who earn their required AR points each nine weeks will be able to check out one movie per week. The other two cases are going to be for the series that students check out the most.

Our "Book Hospital" is now ready for any books that need repairs.

If you haven't stopped in for a visit lately, please do. I could always use an extra set of hands to help me with the books! :)

Learning the Library

Students have finished touring the library. This week 4th and 5th graders learned about OPAC, our online catalog. They practiced doing a search and became familiar with the various sections of the library. 2nd and 3rd graders listened to The Shelf Elf book and practiced using shelf markers. Kindergarteners and 1st graders listened to The Library Monkeys and learned how to take care of books. 2nd -5th graders can check out two books each week. One on their level and one "free" selection. 1st graders can check out one book on their level. Kindergarteners will be checking out books soon. All this reading makes Mrs. Owen one happy librarian! :)

Library pets

Hermit crabs are cool - at least that is what the students' tell me! Big bad John and Sam are posing for the camera...lol!
Lulu and Superman aren't quite so photogenic. I have shown the crabs to all the students and that is the very first thing they want to see when they come in the library. I took pictures of the crabs as they moved around the tank so the students' could see what they actually look like. They are also easy to manage, thank goodness!

Clifford the Big Red Dog...Kohl's Cares

A big thank you to Mrs. Donna Hooper who recently donated these Clifford books and this stuffed Clifford. She has been a wonderful contributor and supporter of CES's library. We appreciate your generosity, Mrs. Donna!

Thank you!

Carla for trying to help me sort out my hot mess...as you see ~ it is still a hot mess! lol!

Also, a big thank you to Ms. Donna Hooper - she has been donating books right and left! The students at CES are benefiting from your generosity and I so appreciate it!

Thanks also to my sweet friend, Kristi, who found a book from 1925 with Charlotte Elementary School stamped inside. That is so cool! I love old books and that is by far one of the coolest I have!

Thanks to my parent volunteers this week: Ms. Monica, Ms. Betsy, and Ms. Debbie - you all rock!

Thanks to my fellow librarian, Karla, for the sweet reading boy and girl statues. They look great in the CES library.

:)

Oops!

Well, technically speaking ~ I made a hot mess out of my last post. I was so proud to know how to embed an image until of course I saw what happened. Sorry about that. Now if I could just figure out how to get rid of it without ruining the image. Ideas anyone?

♥ this!

Have you seen this?

I am sure many of you have already seen or heard about Matt Damon and his speech supporting teachers. I am the librarian, but first and foremost I am a teacher. Thank you Mr. Damon for recognizing and supporting us!

Open House was a success!

A huge success that is! There were around one hundred visitors to the library today. There were lots of positive comments on all the physical changes to the library. Many students oohhed and aahhed our pets, the hermit crabs. Some questions were asked about the Adopt-a-Book program. Tons of smiles were passed around! Thanks to all who came! If you haven't been in, please stop by soon and let me know what you think! :)

Ready, set, go!

Well it is here. Open house is tomorrow from 2-4. Then Monday is the first day of the 2011-2012 school year. I am hoping to see lots of friends in the library. I'm also hoping to adopt lots of books. :)

I did it!

Today I described all the changes I have planned for the library to the teachers. I was nervous but it turned out fine. No one complained or booed and I didn't develop hives or faint! I have heard positive things about the looks of the library and everyone seems to be happy with what I am going to try. Thanks to all who have and continue to encourage me....I greatly appreciate it!

Tomorrow is the big day!

Tomorrow is a big day! Inservice in the library. Everyone will see the physical changes and I will be explaining some changes I am making to the program. I am hope all the changes will be well received. I am expecting some things will have to be tweaked but I am flexible so it will all work out.

I think I finally have everything in it's "resting place"! I am sure things will crop up but at least I am beginning to feel settled and like I belong. I would say that is an accomplishment. My favorite girl has been here with me today and has had fun playing in a new-to-her place.

Once I complete the bulletin board in the hallway, I will be down to the nitty gritty. I will have to assign students to their new homerooms/grade levels in the computer and I am anxiously waiting for my first book order to arrive so I can learn how to process them. Exciting things await, albeit a little nervously. :)

Here are a few pics!

I Finally remembered my camera! I have added a "reading nook" that will be used as a reward for students who are doing great things for their teacher. I am hoping it will make the library a place where kids want to be!

Also, the library has some pets this year...there are four hermit crabs in the tank. They are cool pets to have!

I keep forgetting to take my camera...

I so want to post some pics so I can get feedback on the "new look". The "cozy spot" has gotten some use already from the kiddos at daycare and they seemed to thoroughly enjoy it.

I am limiting myself to only 3 big changes to the library this year. That way, I won't overwhelm myself or the teachers. #1 students will check in their books #2 student workers and #3 adopt-a-book program.

I am wondering if I should do a teacher survey to see how I could best help the teachers?

Slow and steady....

The library is coming together...slowly. Pictures will posted soon.
